Newborn Hearing Screening Program
The Newborn Hearing Screening Program (NHSP) helps families arrange follow-up audiological evaluations for babies who do not pass hearing screening and for children under three years of age who may have developed a permanent hearing loss after birth. If a permanent hearing loss is diagnosed, NHSP assists families in obtaining early intervention services such as speech therapy. NHSP also coordinates all statewide hospital screening efforts and maintains statewide records about hearing screening results. State law requires that all babies born in Hawaii receive hearing screening soon after birth, unless testing conflicts with the family's religious beliefs.
